Admission Requirements

  • Submit an Application: Prospective students must submit an online application, including personal information, academic history, and answers to essay prompts, him/her. It must be completed and submitted via the UMass Amherst Admissions website.
  • Transcript: Applicants must submit an official high school transcript demonstrating completion of a college preparatory curriculum. Transfer students must submit transcripts from all previously attended universities. 
  • Standardized Test Scores: Massachusetts Amherst College has a test-optional policy for undergraduate admissions, but applicants must continue to submit their SAT or ACT scores. However, these results are not required for approval review. 
  • Letter of Recommendation: UMass Amherst generally does not require letters of recommendation for undergraduate admission. However, certain programs and scholarships may require it.
  • Personal Statement/Essay: Applicants often submit a personal statement or essay that provides insight into their academic goals, extracurricular activities, and personal experiences. 
  • Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee is required to submit an application. Depending on financial need, tuition may be waived for eligible students.
  • Deadlines: UMass Amherst has specific application deadlines for each semester of admission (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Adhering to these deadlines is essential to ensure that applicants are considered for admission.
