Stony Brook University, also known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook or SUNY Stony Brook, is a public research university located in Stony Brook, New York, United States. Its main campus is located on the north shore of Long Island, approximately 60 miles east of New York City. The university's large campus spans more than 1,454 acres and offers a mix of academic buildings, research facilities, and student housing.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

  • Application enroll: Prospective undergraduate students must complete an online application through the SUNY Application or Common Application. 
  • High school transcript: A high school transcript is required. Stony Brook generally seeks strong academic performance, including courses in English, math, science, social studies and foreign languages. 
  • Standardized test score: Although Stony Brook University's test is optional for  2023 and 2024 admissions, meaning no standardized test score is required ( SAT or ACT), applicants may still choose to submit scores if they feel it will strengthen their application.
  • Letter of Recommendation: Although not always required, some programs may request a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor who can speak to the academic ability and personality of the candidate's manner. 
  • Personal Statement or Essay: Applicants are typically required to submit a personal statement or essay describing their academic and personal goals, as well as their reasons for Why they want to study at Stony Brook University.
  • Extracurricular Activities: A resume or list of extracurricular activities, community service and leadership experience may be considered part of the application.
  • Application fee: Normally, a non-refundable application fee is required. However, qualifying students may have the fee waived. 
  • Optional Interviews: Some programs may offer optional interviews as part of the application process. These interviews give candidates the opportunity to discuss their interests and experiences.

  • CV or Curriculum Vitae (CV): Many graduate programs require a current resume or CV detailing the applicant's academic and professional experience.
  • Portfolio or writing sample: Some arts or humanities programs may request a portfolio or writing sample as part of the application. 
  • Application fee: Typically, a non-refundable application fee is required for graduate applications.
